It was almost noon of 03 October 2010 at our quarters at Navy Base, Baguio City, when Zoe was on her usual habit of disturbing everything that is in good shape. Papa was watching TV, more or less 3 meters away from her. She tried to pull some strings at the back of the TV; however, the string was connected with the loosely placed speaker box at the back of the TV. Suddenly, when her weight and pure insistence outweigh the mass and friction of the box on the table, I saw the box fall directly on my poor baby Zoe… I was shocked ….she was shocked too. A streak of blood was initially visible with a lump on her forehead, starting to swell. I shouted to get something, but can’t exactly say what to get. Perhaps, my mind and mouth failed to coordinate during that moment of shock, while her mom was asking me what to get. I said betadine….Then I shouted “Ice.,… Bilis” as I hugged the poor girl as she cried so loud. Then, Francis brought a big chunk of ice in plastic… I told him to crush it….
Moments later, her mom took the girl on arms and applied very cold compress on her swelling forehead… the girl tried to remove the ice while crying because no the initial pain. It took almost 30 minutes before Zoe calmed down while watching TV.
It was a very shocking moment for us. After several hours, the swelling decreased to the point that it was almost unnoticeable. Thanks God… She again played to her heart content without knowing that anytime another speaker would fall on her head. She has still no concept of lessons learned at one (1) year and nine (9) months… Poor girl.. Growing up is really a very dangerous and painful process… he he he
